News Health: The cure for guilt

Read time: 1 min 31 sec

Happy Sunday,

“For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you took care of Me; I was in prison and you visited Me.”

Matthew 25:35-36

The cure for news-induced guilt
Every day, the news shows us more hurt than we can handle—wars, natural disasters, starvation, abuse, political oppression. Each crisis feels urgent and personal.

But here’s the truth: You’re human. You’re finite. And that’s not a flaw.

In Matthew 25, Jesus calls His followers to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, care for the sick, and visit the imprisoned. But He wasn’t assigning each individual Christian an impossible checklist. He was describing the kind of love His Body would be known for—a collective response, not a solo mission.

That means your limits are part of God's design. You don’t need to feel guilty for every news story you don’t act on. Of course you can’t do it all.

This is not an excuse for inaction. It’s a call to serve where you’re placed and let the rest be carried by others in the Body, and ultimately by Christ Himself.

So, next time you learn of a tragedy (likely, later today) that you cannot act on, do not feel guilty. Instead, here are some other options:

  1. Pray for courage and strength for the local Body of Christ.

  2. Donate to a trusted organization that is responding.

  3. Be grateful that, while you are limited, you worship a God who is not.

What do you think?

For years, my dad (a pastor of 40 years) has sent The Friday Update—quick insights on culture, thought-provoking quotes, fascinating statistics, and Biblical wisdom. I didn’t read it for a long time (it was an email from my dad…), but finally gave it a shot and am pleased to say that he seems wiser and more interesting than when I was in high school.
