Happy Sunday,
“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”
Proverbs 27:17
I have exciting news.
Some of you know my story: back in 2017, I intentionally started consuming lots of news, and that turned out to be a really bad idea. For the first time in my life, I was consistently anxious and angry.
To get my relationship with the news in check, I started summarizing the week’s headlines every Friday and pairing them with brief biblical reminders I needed to hear: God’s in control, I’m called to love (not hate) others, and I need to care for those in need. After months of letting the news teach me to be angry and anxious about everything, I needed to retrain my brain and soul to respond differently.
It worked.
Over the next few years, God did a remarkable thing. Those little summaries went from being sent to some friends and family in 2018 to over 1.5 million people today.
A couple of years ago, I embarked on a related journey: to figure out why The Pour Over didn’t make me angry and anxious. How did summaries of the same news not produce the same effect? I’ve been writing about that journey in this newsletter, News Health.
And earlier this year… I signed a book deal with Tyndale.
It’s a book on news health—what I’ve learned about consuming news in healthy ways as I’ve launched and grown The Pour Over over the last decade. It’ll be shaped by the very best stuff from this newsletter, which has been shaped by your ideas and feedback.
Pretty much everyone agrees that this announcement is way too early because the book won’t come out for over a year. But I’m telling you because the manuscript is due this fall, and I want these extra months of your critical feedback to make it as excellent as possible! So, your new homework after every edition: whenever I say something unclear or wrong, let me know so we don’t put it in print.
What do you think?
